About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Work alongside maintenance and operations teams to ensure safe and efficient plant operation
  • Lead by example regarding safety, reliability, quality, costs, process improvement, and project management
  • Optimize process control systems in the assigned area through continual improvement initiatives
  • Understand and improve core process models for continual process improvement
  • Analyze and solve sheet steel-making process problems using mechanical and electrical controls
  • Understand how level 1 and level 2 control systems work together to automate the process
  • Provide technical leadership within the assigned area of responsibility
  • Promote collaboration and cross-functional communication among operations, maintenance, quality, engineering, and project teams
  • Support safe and efficient plant performance
  • Work with PLCs, HMIs, industrial communication networks, distributed remote I/O, drives and motor controls, hydraulic controls, and related level 1 systems
  • Support complex subsystems including line tension control, line speed control, mill stand control, and furnace control
  • Work with level 2 applications, databases, message queues, direct messaging, physics-based product setup models, and setup optimizations

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Four-year degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or related field and/or equivalent experience
  • Four (4) years of experience in industrial process control/automation within the manufacturing industry
  • Ability to apply kinematics, thermodynamics, and metallurgical/material science concepts toward process improvement solutions
  • Industrial process control/automation equipment upgrade experience
  • Experience working in a heavy industrial environment
  • Experience with level 1 automation control systems, including PLCs, drives, HMIs, and hydraulic controls, and/or level 2 automation control systems, including system databases, setup models, and C/C++/C# applications
  • Experience working in a sheet steel mill
  • Experience working with data within SQL databases and other process data acquisition tools such as IBA
  • Ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards
  • Ability to work Monday through Friday on-site and scheduled or unscheduled overtime
