  • Complete, check, and process official papers and documents
  • Intervene in and resolve fights, fires, medical emergencies, and other crises
  • Restrain combative inmates
  • Serve or supervise inmate meals
  • Supervise inmates during cleaning duties
  • Provide informal counseling to inmates
  • Assist with inmate telephone calls, mail, laundry, visits, and commissary
  • Directly supervise activities of 1 to 58 inmates at a time
  • Address complaints and resolve problems

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Eighteen years of age
  • Citizen of the United States
  • Must consent to a criminal background check
  • Required to achieve TCOLE certification as a Corrections Officer within twelve months of appointment
  • Must attach High School Diploma/GED and Driver's License/State Identification Card before submitting the application
  • Must take the Law Enforcement Civil Service Exam (LECSE)
  • Driving record must meet County and insurance carrier standards for official business driving
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic and compute rates, ratios, and percentages
  • Ability to solve practical problems and interpret written, oral, diagram, or schedule instructions
  • Ability to maintain control in highly stressful situations
  • Ability to learn laws, departmental policies, rules, regulations, instructions, and correctional literature
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports and maintain complete records
  • Ability to meet established physical standards
  • Ability to lift and move more than 100 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to lift inmates who are prone and separate fighting inmates
  • Required vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, plus focus adjustment
