About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Drive various trucks and operate equipment for construction, repair, and maintenance of streets, landfills, alleys, county facilities, grounds, and rights-of-way
- Inspect and evaluate machinery, equipment, and systems, including loaders, rollers, maintainers, augers, chip spreaders, sweepers, and compactors
- Check and adjust oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic systems before traveling to job sites
- Perform routine maintenance, construction, drainage, traffic control, and right-of-way mowing work
- Haul materials and equipment to construction or repair sites using dump trucks or other trucks
- Operate heavy equipment such as a maintainer in trainee status
- Perform preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs, including welding
- Depending on assignment, supervise or direct a patch crew intermittently
- Train employees, plan and assign work, direct work, and resolve problems as needed
- Work before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies as directed
Requirements
What you’ll need- Less than high school education; high school diploma or GED certificate preferred but not required
- Minimum of one year of experience as a truck driver or equipment operator
- Must possess a Texas Class "C" Driver License
- Driving record must meet County and insurance carrier standards
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, rates, ratios, and percentages
- Ability to apply common sense and solve problems in standardized situations
- Good knowledge of safe equipment operation and applicable Texas Motor Vehicle Code provisions
- Ability to service and make minor repairs, including welding, and follow safety standards
- Ability to operate or learn to operate equipment safely and effectively
- Good driving record
- Ability to work cooperatively with other employees
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
- Must be available before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies as directed
