About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Scope, design, build, and maintain secure, scalable, enterprise-ready APIs
- Improve tenancy and isolation boundaries across violations, citations, and payments systems
- Partner with product management to turn business needs into pragmatic technical solutions
- Make and communicate engineering trade-offs, including build versus buy and flexibility versus simplicity
- Operate production systems, respond to incidents, and drive root-cause resolution
- Mentor and coach engineers in technical reasoning and documenting decisions
- Raise the quality of design and execution across the team
- Collaborate with Infrastructure, Product, Support, and other cross-functional teams in a distributed and hybrid environment
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years of experience building and operating large-scale production systems
- 5+ years of programming with Go, Ruby, Java, Python, Kotlin, or similar languages
- 5+ years of experience designing and building scalable backend APIs or platform services
- 3+ years of real operational experience owning production systems, diagnosing issues under pressure, and improving reliability
- Strong understanding of API design best practices, including security, data formats and interchange, version control, and CI/CD
- Track record of working directly with product management to shape solutions
- Interest in working as a generalist across technology stacks
- Pragmatic approach to selecting appropriate solutions
- Ownership of work and ability to collaborate with teammates
- Understanding of mentoring and coaching early-career engineers
- Knowledge of distributed systems is a bonus
- Experience working in platform teams building and maintaining foundational services is a bonus
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
