About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide expert legal advice across the full spectrum of Ofcom’s work
  • Work as part of legal teams on major projects or with senior lawyers as a peer reviewer
  • Report ultimately to Legal Directors and the General Counsel
  • Take ownership of a portfolio of legal work across diverse projects and sectors
  • Assess and resolve legal risk in the context of Ofcom’s overall strategy
  • Provide risk-based analysis and strategic advice on new and significant points of law and policy work
  • Produce clear and well-structured written documents
  • Draft regulatory conditions, rules, codes, guidance, and statutory instruments
  • Help conduct litigation
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Ofcom and with experts from multiple disciplines
  • Liaise with central government, other regulators, and regulated industries
  • Support more junior lawyers, including through peer review
  • Contribute to organisational improvements and implement solutions
  • Work on projects across their lifecycle, including policy development, consultations, decision-making, litigation, and enforcement

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Qualified lawyer: solicitor, barrister or equivalent
  • Post-qualification experience in private practice, in-house, or at a public authority
  • Experience advising on one or more relevant legal areas, including regulatory or competition matters, consumer issues, media, technology, online safety, data protection, or public law
  • Prepared to work in a regulatory environment involving new areas of law, sectors, and technologies
  • Ability to work with greater independence than associate lawyers, with support and oversight from principal legal advisors and legal directors
  • Clear and concise written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to provide clear and accessible legal advice
  • Ability to analyse problems in new areas of law, sectors, and technology
  • Strategic and creative problem-solving ability
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues from multiple disciplines
  • Ability to take responsibility for actions, decisions, and outcomes
  • Ability to manage and prioritise workload flexibly and anticipate project deadline risks
