About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Support development of Ofcom’s approach to regulating online safety, including protection from harmful and illegal content
- Resolve complex policy problems by gathering information, conducting analysis, and identifying policy improvement options
- Ensure policy work is based on a comprehensive programme of research
- Draft clear and ambitious guidance chapters and distil technical information into coherent policy narratives
- Oversee and project-manage the workload of junior and cross-functional colleagues
- Identify policy solutions and test them with internal and external stakeholders
- Engage senior colleagues, including Ofcom directors and the CEO, to explain policy work and support external engagement
- Build and maintain effective relationships across Ofcom
- Develop online expertise across Ofcom’s online work programme
- Monitor online trends, technological developments, and the public policy landscape relating to online regulation
- Work across policy development, implementation, compliance initiatives, and other cross-cutting online safety projects as priorities evolve
- Contribute to priority areas including Women and Girls’ Online Safety, age assurance, artificial intelligence, and the proposed social media ban
Requirements
What you’ll need- Significant experience leading or contributing to regulatory policy development
- Experience gathering evidence and engaging stakeholders
- Experience analysing complex information
- Experience drafting policy proposals or recommendations
- Experience presenting clear, evidence-based advice to senior decision-makers
- Experience in policy development
- Knowledge of one or more of: AI, age assurance, and online platform features and functionalities, including proactive technology, recommender systems, and content moderation
- Ability to identify and solve complex issues using evidence-based methods
- Ability to develop well-founded solutions
- Ability to foresee upcoming trends and challenges
- Ability to organise tasks, set clear goals, manage resources, and monitor progress
- Ability to take responsibility for actions, decisions, and outcomes
- Ability to influence opinions and decisions through compelling communication and persuasion
- Ability to work on potentially sensitive or distressing topics, including hate and terrorism, online child sexual abuse, and suicide or self-harm content
