About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own work from idea to production, including problem definition, solution shaping, development, testing and production support
- Build backend systems in Python on Azure, including cloud-native services, APIs, event-driven systems and automation
- Collaborate with Product and Security Operations to identify needs and develop practical engineering solutions
- Design systems handling failures, retries, concurrency, asynchronous processing and external-service dependencies
- Balance reliability, security, performance and maintainability
- Use AI coding tools while reviewing and challenging their output
- Build tests and checks for expected behavior, edge cases, failures and security boundaries
- Monitor services, investigate production issues and contribute to incident response and on-call arrangements
- Review code and designs, share knowledge, mentor colleagues and improve engineering practices, tooling and CI/CD
- Collaborate regularly with the Zurich team and internationally
Requirements
What you’ll need- 6+ years of experience in software engineering
- Strong experience building and running backend services in production
- Excellent Python skills, including testing, typing, dependency management and asynchronous programming
- Understanding of distributed systems, event-driven architectures, APIs, data persistence and failure handling
- Experience building cloud-native applications on Azure, or strong experience with another major cloud platform and an interest in learning Azure
- Good product judgement
- Experience using AI coding assistants or agents in real development work
- Ability to review, debug and challenge AI-generated output
- Understanding of appropriate use of AI-assisted development, especially regarding security and sensitive information
- Strong debugging skills across application code, services, data and infrastructure
- Experience with Git, CI/CD, automated testing, observability and secure software development
- Ability to explain technical decisions, risks and trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical colleagues
- Confidence working independently, dealing with ambiguity and taking ownership of decisions
- Willingness to work from the Zurich office two days per week
- Fluency in English
