About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support Orbital Engineering's Utility Services team on projects in the greater St. Louis, Missouri area
  • Visually identify, inspect, and record equipment and construction situations in the field, including rights-of-way
  • Apply National Electric Safety Code standards, client standards, federal, state, and local guidelines to complete engineering designs
  • Develop pole replacement, communication space rearrangement, joint-use, and make-ready construction designs
  • Analyze field-collected data and imagery and update applicable software packages for design implementation
  • Use client proprietary software and equipment in the engineering design workflow
  • Facilitate new attachment permitting processes when needed
  • Communicate with coworkers and clients to determine effective engineering design solutions
  • Complete assigned work according to project schedules and budgets
  • Communicate project status regularly with management
  • Communicate with clients to determine cost-effective project solutions
  • Provide timely documentation and support to accounting functions to ensure projects are on budget and properly accounted for
  • Transcribe notes and use measuring devices to organize field data
  • Conduct frequent driving, walking, standing, navigating, and fieldwork throughout the design process
  • Attend client-site meetings and interact with the general public, landowners, and operators
  • Coordinate with utility personnel during field activities in energized substations when required

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or GED required with 3+ years of experience in fieldwork or a construction environment, drafting, utility experience, or technical design
  • Associate's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related technical discipline with 0-2 years of experience, with interest in fieldwork or surveying
  • Must reside within approximately a one hour radius of St. Louis, MO
  • Must be an organized person who can keep data organized from start to finish on a project
  • Ability to prioritize work on multiple projects and effectively communicate project statuses
  • Computer proficiency including general Microsoft Office products, design, and business enterprise software
  • Effective written and oral communication at all levels within an organizational structure
  • Reasoning skills and ability to solve practical problems
  • Dependable transportation
  • Valid driver's license with insurance
  • Ability to pass a fit for duty test
  • Ability to work from home and an office setting, as required
  • Ability to pass a post-offer drug and alcohol test, including marijuana, in compliance with Federal regulations
  • Subject to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of continued employment
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings/schematics
  • Working knowledge of electrical distribution assets and/or communication equipment construction
  • Familiarity with pole loading or construction modeling software such as Spida Calc, O-Calc, Pole Foreman, Katapult, AutoCAD, or DDS
  • Familiarity with design and checking practices for engineering drawings and deliverables
  • Familiarity with Safe Work Practices and PPE applications
  • Willingness to travel overnight or for extended periods based on project assignment
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and residential, commercial, and industrial areas
  • Ability to attend client-site meetings and interact with the general public, including landowners and operators
  • Ability to coordinate with utility personnel when entering energized extra-high-voltage substations up to 745kV
