About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Prepare construction documents, including plan and profile drawings for overhead and underground electric distribution, fiber optic, and telecommunications facilities
  • Prepare make-ready work for joint-use projects
  • Assist with engineering/project cost estimates and execution schedules
  • Provide field support during construction
  • Perform quality reviews and follow QA/QC processes
  • Evaluate equipment loading, including transformers and structural pole loading, for safe, reliable, cost-effective designs
  • Apply NESC, client, federal, state, and local guidelines to engineering designs
  • Analyze field-collected data and imagery and update software packages for design implementation
  • Use client proprietary software and equipment in the engineering design workflow and attachment permitting process
  • Complete assigned work within project schedules and budgets and communicate status to management
  • Communicate with clients to determine cost-effective engineering design solutions
  • Provide documentation and support to accounting for project budgeting and accounting
  • Transcribe notes and use measuring devices to inspect and record field data
  • Attend client-site meetings and interact with the public, including landowners and operators
  • Identify and record equipment and construction conditions in the field
  • Collaborate with coworkers and clients to determine engineering design solutions
  • Travel, drive, walk, stand, navigate complex terrain, and work in varied weather conditions as required
  • Support primarily remote/office-based work, with fieldwork throughout the design process

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or GED required with 3+ years of experience in fieldwork or a construction environment, drafting, utility experience, or technical design
  • Associate Degree in engineering technology, construction, drafting technology, or related technical discipline with 0-2 years of experience, with interest in fieldwork, surveying or equivalent experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction, GIS, drafting, or related technical discipline with 0-2 years of experience is preferred
  • Prior utility design experience or make-ready design experience preferred
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings/schematics preferred
  • Working knowledge of electrical distribution assets and/or communication equipment construction preferred
  • Experience in pole loading (Spida Calc, O-Calc, Pole Foreman, or Katapult) or other construction modeling software (AutoCAD) beneficial
  • Knowledge of industry utility or joint-use software (SPANS, NJUNS, IkeGPS) for make-ready engineering and construction beneficial
  • Knowledge of utility distribution design and construction standards, industry practices, and design software packages
  • Familiar with design and checking practices for engineering drawings and deliverables
  • Familiar with safe work practices and PPE applications
  • Organized, able to keep project data organized from start to finish
  • Ability to prioritize work on multiple projects and effectively communicate project statuses
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office products, design, and business enterprise software
  • Effective written and oral communication at all levels within an organizational structure
  • Reasoning skills and ability to solve practical problems
  • Dependable transportation and a valid driver’s license with insurance
  • Must be able to pass a fit for duty test
  • Ability to work from home and an office setting, as required
  • Ability to pass a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test; subject to random testing
  • Must be willing to travel overnight or for extended periods based on project assignment
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions and residential, commercial, and industrial areas as needed
