About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Operate equipment necessary to maintain and repair roadways, highways, bridges and structures
- Work with the traveling Region 2 striping crew from approximately May 1 through October 31
- Work with the Detroit maintenance crew from November 1 through April 30
- Perform manual labor to repair roadway surfaces and shoulders
- Operate a wide variety of light and heavy equipment
- Maintain drainage systems; dig and clean ditches; repair culverts, inlets and erosion
- Repair guardrails, barriers, milepost markers, delineators and fences
- Set up traffic control operations and control and flag the traveling public and work crews
- Complete snow removal, plowing, deicing and sanding operations
- Dispose of debris, clear brush and mow grass
- Apply specific pesticide and herbicidal sprays on roadside vegetation
- Complete minor service and repair of equipment, tools and motorized equipment
- Apply, maintain, remove or replace roadway striping and legends
- Assist with emergency cleanup and traffic control after incidents, storms and spills
Requirements
What you’ll need- One year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work; OR two years of general landscaping, maintenance, mechanical, farming, logging, and/or construction experience or training
- Maximum 45 minute response time to 2785 25th Street, Salem, OR 97302 during the summer season
- Maximum 45 minute response time to 600 North Santiam Highway, Detroit, OR 97342 during the winter season
- Current, valid commercial driver's license A (CDL-A) with a tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, no 5th wheel restrictions and no manual transmission restrictions; OR ability to acquire a Class A commercial learner permit within 60 days of hire and a CDL-A with a tanker endorsement and restrictions removed within six months of hire
- Valid U.S. driver license and acceptable driving record
- FMCSA Clearinghouse registration and full query check for final candidates, with annual query for current employees
- Ability to work long hours, travel overnight, and be available including weekends and holidays for emergency, on-call and weather-related purposes
- Ability to walk, stand, bend and stoop for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 60 pounds
- Ability to work around hazardous materials and chemicals
- Experience in road maintenance, construction or a maintenance training program is desirable
- Winter maintenance experience is desirable
- Experience performing pavement marking and legend work is desirable
- Experience using hand tools and operating light and heavy equipment is desirable
