About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Draft, finalize, and proofread case-related correspondence and pleadings
- Prepare exhibits, court documents, subpoenas, and witness fees
- File documents electronically and in hard copy with appropriate venues
- Enter information into case management systems
- Schedule follow-ups and monitor case activity and critical legal deadlines
- Create, maintain, file, and organize case files
- Schedule meetings, appointments, hearings, depositions, and interviews
- Maintain reminders for important court deadlines
- Contact government agencies and communicate with state and federal officials
- Use internet databases to gather information and search for addresses and court information
- Update and review charts for accurate case information
- Obtain information and materials requested by attorneys or courts
- Complete duties of other clerical staff and train other section clerical staff as needed
- Perform special projects assigned by section attorneys
- Review state, county, and federal rules of practice and procedure
Requirements
What you’ll need- Two years of clerical/secretarial experience, including at least one year as a legal assistant or secretary for an attorney or judge or performance of legal support duties
- Experience must include proficiency in word processing software
- Have and maintain a valid driver’s license
- Demonstrate professional verbal and written communication skills
- Experience working independently, prioritizing work, and meeting time-sensitive deadlines
- Ability to learn and use document management, case management, and other computer programs
- Legal experience in a litigation environment with proficient knowledge of legal terminology
- Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in applying laws and policies
- Knowledge and understanding of state court rules and procedures
- Ability to maintain punctual and regular attendance
- Able to lift and transport boxes or case files
- Experience providing accuracy and attention to detail
- Skilled in problem-solving and information-gathering techniques
- Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive case information
- Experience with internet databases
- Experience working in an open office environment with noise from telephones, printers, copiers, conversations, and other office equipment
