About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Create audit programs to identify case-specific issues
- Perform office and field audits independently and collaboratively
- Review prior audit files, tax payment history, and licensee communications to determine audit examination level
- Perform audit procedures to verify compliance with fuels tax law by reviewing receipts, sales, records, and other data
- Prepare written audit reports and recommendations for improvement
- Review work performed by other auditors
- Respond to internal and external customer requests regarding fuels tax licensing, accounting, or reporting
- Interpret complex statutes, rules, and policies verbally and in writing
- Train and mentor new auditors
- Travel in-state and out-of-state by air and automobile, with lodging as needed
- Lift up to 30 pounds and push, pull, or move storage boxes or records
Requirements
What you’ll need- Six years of experience in tax auditing, audit defense, or professional accounting; one year may be in tax compliance, tax preparation, providing law training, or developing tax forms or instructions
- 32 credit hours in accounting or other equivalent certification, training, or coursework
- A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field may substitute for up to three years of experience
- Valid U.S. driver license and acceptable driving record
- Experience communicating complex technical information, findings, and recommendations verbally and in writing to varied audiences
- Experience proposing, developing, and implementing improvements to policies, procedures, processes, or organizational practices
- Experience interpreting and administering laws, statutes, and administrative rules
- Experience analyzing financial statements, reports, and other records
- Experience training, mentoring, or providing technical guidance to others in audit processes and practices
