About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as technical lead in fracture mechanics and fatigue for steel and movable bridges in Oregon
  • Develop and operate fracture mechanics and non-destructive testing programs to identify fatigue life of steel bridge members
  • Develop and operate inspection and materials testing programs for fracture-critical steel bridge members
  • Set appropriate inspection schedules
  • Evaluate, design, and provide specialized inspection of movable bridge machinery and mechanical systems
  • Develop scopes of work and consultant selection criteria for outsourced projects
  • Investigate materials to improve fatigue life and corrosion resistance and reduce maintenance costs
  • Prepare research project needs statements to identify gaps and potential benefits of materials and design approaches
  • Consult with design engineers, consultants, and resident engineers on fracture mechanics, welded connections, repairs, and replacements
  • Train designers and engineers in mechanical engineering and welding design
  • Develop non-destructive testing methods to refine bridge load ratings and assess bridge conditions
  • Provide technical input for design standards improving steel bridge fatigue life
  • Support regional staff with project development and scoping
  • Work in an office environment with hybrid options and occasional overnight travel
  • Perform field work in adverse weather, near traffic, railways, or water, including work 20 feet or more above ground

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Possession of a mechanical engineering (ME) license OR ability to obtain a license in Oregon within six months of hire
  • Three years of licensed experience providing the required knowledge and skills
  • Mechanical engineering experience covered by the industrial exemption may be considered in lieu of three years of licensed experience
  • Applicants registered in another state must obtain a temporary permit to practice engineering under ORS 672.109 within six months of hire
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and acceptable driving record
  • Knowledge of weldment design, metallurgy, fracture mechanics, and fatigue of steel members and structures
  • Experience in analysis, evaluation, and instrumentation for determining the remaining life of steel bridge members
  • Experience analyzing and designing movable bridge machinery and mechanical systems
  • Experience planning repair or replacement of deteriorated steel components
  • Experience as a lead engineer responsible for a project or program
