About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design, build and run systems supporting biosample management, operations and logistics
  • Develop an internal web application for the Biosamples Operations team
  • Build data-processing services and integrations with laboratory partners
  • Enable teams to track and manage samples and maintain a clear chain of custody
  • Help teams understand information returned as samples are processed
  • Work across frontend, backend and infrastructure in a total-ownership model
  • Collaborate closely with operational colleagues and translate their needs into well-designed software
  • Identify, prevent and troubleshoot problems
  • Participate in code reviews, TDD, CI/CD, pairing and technical discussions
  • Operationally manage software after launch, including observability, logging, metrics, error reporting, debugging and live incident management
  • Mentor and coach less experienced engineers

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Strong knowledge of Typescript and Node.js
  • Knowledge of modern frontend development, including JavaScript/TypeScript with frameworks like React or Next.js, and experience building intuitive, user-focused interfaces
  • Experience designing and implementing backend systems
  • Prior experience with Azure (ideally), AWS or GCP
  • Comfortable working with Infrastructure as Code, ideally with knowledge of Terraform
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes is a bonus
  • Knowledge and familiarity with good data modelling and design patterns
  • In-depth knowledge of relational databases, e.g. PostgreSQL
  • Familiarity with blob, document and graph data stores
  • Experience using modern, agile development practices such as code review, TDD, CI/CD and pairing
  • Experience using Git and GitHub
  • Experience operationally managing live software components, including observability, logging, metrics, error reporting, debugging and live incident management
  • Experience working with sensitive personal data
  • Experience working in or with cross-functional teams including engineers, product, UX and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate with stakeholders and audiences outside your own team
  • Experience working in small, growing organisations with a high degree of ambiguity
  • Strong understanding of software quality principles and practices
  • Comfortable mentoring and coaching less experienced engineers
  • Comfortable participating in and sometimes facilitating technical discussions
