About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Direct a team of writers and editors
  • Assign work and maintain the publication schedule
  • Own the publication calendar and story pipeline across written formats
  • Set deadlines and follow up when interns miss them
  • Manage and revise “How-To” documents for publishing processes
  • Chair weekly standing editorial meetings
  • Attend Leadership and All-Staff meetings and provide updates
  • Help HR recruit, interview, and onboard contributors
  • Train editors and writers and set standards for sourcing, process, and format
  • Safeguard ONC’s nonpartisan positioning and branding
  • Coordinate joint projects with teams such as Media & Marketing
  • Coordinate and develop other people rather than primarily producing content

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Writing or editing experience in any setting: professional, academic, student publication, or news organization
  • Ability to edit for argument and structure, in addition to grammar and style
  • Experience coordinating a group toward a deadline
  • Comfort giving direction and holding people to their commitments
  • Sound judgment about sourcing, attribution, and factual accuracy
  • Demonstrated follow-through on sustained commitments
  • Resume and a cover letter of 500 words or fewer required for application
  • Cover letter must address experience, a time you led or coordinated a team project, availability over the next few months, and two changes to ONC’s Editorial Team
