Key responsibilities & impact

Build high-quality product experiences across the full stack for learners, families, educators, and partners
Design intuitive React user experiences and scalable backend systems and APIs
Evolve data models and architecture
Improve product quality and performance
Own projects from problem definition through design, implementation, launch, and iteration
Make pragmatic technical decisions balancing speed, quality, maintainability, and user impact
Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, Researchers, Analysts, and Engineers to shape requirements and solutions
Design scalable, maintainable systems and APIs
Improve architecture, testing, performance, observability, and engineering practices
Use AI tools throughout planning, implementation, testing, debugging, and code review
Identify opportunities to incorporate AI into Outschool’s product and learning experiences
Deploy and operate software; participate in on-call and investigate production issues
Use monitoring and user feedback to improve reliability and product quality
Conduct code reviews, technical discussions, documentation, and mentoring
Identify and proactively improve product, codebase, and development-process friction

Requirements

What you’ll need

7+ years of professional software engineering experience
Strong experience with React, TypeScript, and Node.js
Experience designing and building APIs and backend services, ideally with GraphQL, REST, or similar technologies
Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including data modeling and query design
Experience owning complex technical projects from design through implementation, launch, and ongoing operation
Understanding of software architecture, testing, performance, reliability, and maintainability in production systems
Experience collaborating with Product Managers, Designers, and other engineers to shape solutions
Active use of AI tools, effective prompting, critical output validation, and judgment about when to override AI output
Ability to provide technical leadership through code reviews, design discussions, documentation, and mentoring
Intermediate or higher English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills
Experience in EdTech or building products for learners, educators, or families
Familiarity with search and discovery systems
Familiarity with payment APIs such as Stripe
Experience at a fast-paced startup or high-growth company
