About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Calibrate, install, maintain, operate, test, troubleshoot, repair and overhaul protective relays and associated equipment
- Maintain substation and electric utility protection systems
- Work with microprocessor, electromechanical and solid-state protective relays
- Maintain and troubleshoot station automation and SCADA systems
- Perform electrical power switching
- Apply configurations to SCADA and EMS remote-control and data-acquisition systems
- Plan and schedule work, including submitting clearance applications to the Operations Control Center
- Test and commission switchgear, network relays and other integrated and non-integrated electrical systems
- Program, install, calibrate, test, troubleshoot and maintain automation, control and synchronized end-to-end protection systems
- Complete documentation, test reports, recording and filing of test results for regulatory compliance
- Direct and train Electrical Technician apprentices and may direct Electricians
- Maintain and revise engineering documents and drawings in the field
- Lift, carry, maneuver and install tools, parts and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds across difficult terrain and elevated structures
- Collaborate with other technicians on testing and equipment installation
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions and near energized equipment
- Operate a company vehicle and use required PPE
Requirements
What you’ll need- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High School diploma, GED or equivalent work experience
- Valid California Driver's License, or ability to obtain on 1st day of hire
- Ability to work in all types of weather extremes
- Ability to drive safely in all weather and road conditions
- Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays
- Must be able to wear company-provided PPE
- Must be able to lift 100 pounds at least once a day
- 3 years of experience testing protective relay equipment in a power station or high voltage substation, or electrical technician-specific training and education
- Ability to work near energized and rotating equipment, loud noises and vibrations
- Ability to comprehend equipment labels and safety signs, learn and apply technical materials, and complete daily logs
- Ability to travel/transfer to a new headquarters upon request
- Ability to operate a company vehicle
- Ability to work safely according to PG&E standards and procedures
- Desired: four-year degree in Electrical Engineering, or two-year Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology plus two years of relay and control experience
- Desired: previous Journeyman Electrical Technician experience with two or more years of relay and control experience
- Desired: high-voltage electrical experience
- Desired: ability to navigate and read MS Word and MS Excel
- Desired: previous military experience in Power Production
- May be subject to JATC review and approval
- Must qualify on applicable prerequisite and secondary pre-employment tests
