About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Serve as a liaison between Penn National Insurance and agents
- Manage relationships with agents, regional underwriting teams and corporate departments
- Assess agent strengths and weaknesses and help achieve profitable growth in premium volume and policy count
- Ensure agents understand commercial lines initiatives, products, policies, procedures and services
- Lead commercial lines agency prospecting, planning and agency management initiatives
- Collaborate with and support Underwriters and RVPs on small business and mid-market decisions
- Perform limited direct underwriting of small commercial new business when directed
- Develop agency forces to pre-qualify, rate and bind profitable commercial lines business
- Evaluate prospective agents and submit written recommendations to the Regional Vice President
- Monitor agency results, growth, profitability and compliance with company initiatives, procedures and policies
- Share relevant industry information, ideas, products and competitor philosophy changes
- Conduct ongoing agency prospecting within Eastern PA
- Participate in commercial lines rate reviews
- Make underwriting decisions within assigned authority and promote ease-of-doing-business initiatives
- Profile commercial lines books of business for profitability analysis
- Develop and implement agency profitability plans and action plans
- Facilitate agency reviews and corrective actions with team members
- Provide agency training on programs, products, services and systems
- Develop annual agency/company marketing plans
- Analyze territory profitability, premium growth and agency representation
- Apply, compile, manipulate and analyze data to solve business problems
- Perform other duties assigned by the President-Partners Mutual or Regional Vice President
Requirements
What you’ll need- Four year college degree preferred
- Continuing education in specialized insurance courses such as IIA, AU, CPCU and CIC preferred
- Maintenance of an active agent’s P&C license in domiciled state preferred
- Minimum of three years’ property/casualty commercial lines underwriting and/or marketing experience with a Property and Casualty carrier preferred
- Agency or broker experience with heavy concentration in underwriting exposure/risk and marketing may substitute for carrier experience
- Technical underwriting knowledge of the commercial lines of business written by Penn National Insurance
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including communication of highly technical information
- Proven sales, negotiations and solution-selling skills
- Working knowledge of agency and company automation systems
- Fundamental personal computer knowledge, with emphasis on Microsoft Office Suite
- Exceptional customer service skills
- Good financial analysis skills
- Excellent time management skills
- Strong commercial lines underwriting analysis skills
- Ability to see and effectively use a computer monitor
- Ability to operate a computer, keyboard, printers and general office equipment
- Ability to access and enter information accurately using automated systems
- Ability to hear and communicate via telephone and/or monitoring devices
- Ability to present information to individuals and groups
- Ability to interpret and apply concepts that may or may not be based upon established guidelines
- Ability to maintain acceptable attendance and adhere to scheduled work hours
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle
- Ability to travel, with overnight stays required
