About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Manage the financial reporting function
- Prepare and analyze internal and external financial reports, regulatory and compliance filings, and state and local premium taxes
- Develop, direct, coach, evaluate, assign work to, and mentor assigned staff
- Establish performance objectives and success criteria; monitor outcomes and address issues
- Develop, implement, and monitor practices, procedures, and guidelines for reporting, reconcilement, interpretation, and analysis of accounting information
- Determine training emphasis, develop educational programs and materials, and deliver training
- Manage Statutory and GAAP financial reporting, including individual company, consolidated, and combined financial statements
- Manage internal results management and board of directors reporting
- Oversee quarterly and annual regulatory filings and audited financial statements
- Oversee general ledger entries, reconciliations, and expense allocation
- Manage preparation of state and local premium tax returns
- Complete or ensure completion of ad hoc assignments and projects
- Maintain the general ledger system, including monthly and annual closing, opening new periods, and changing workflow approvals
- Prepare and/or post entries and prepare, review, and approve account reconciliations
- Identify tasks and resources needed to achieve strategic objectives
- Monitor statutory reporting changes, accounting automation concepts, GAAP practices, principles, and industry trends
- Serve on or lead ad hoc teams, review requirements, coordinate test-result verification, and resolve issues
- Perform other duties assigned by the Director, Financial Reporting
- Supervise the Financial Analyst and Senior Accountant
- Interact with internal staff, auditors, state insurance departments, and local municipalities
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
- Minimum of five years of experience in public accounting (auditing insurance companies) and/or insurance accounting required
- CPA, CPCU or MBA preferred
- AIAF insurance designation preferred
- Previous supervisory experience preferred
- High level of knowledge relating to Statutory insurance accounting and finance principles preferred
- High level of knowledge relating to GAAP insurance accounting and finance principles
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong communication skills with evidence of dedication to quality service and customer focus
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
- Must be able to perform computer-based tasks and access digital information necessary for job duties, including through assistive technologies
- Must be able to access and enter information accurately using automated systems
- Must be able to communicate effectively with internal and external clients using telephone, electronic, or other communication systems
- Must be able to present information to individuals and groups
- Must be able to interpret and apply concepts that may or may not be based upon established guidelines
- Must be able to maintain acceptable attendance and adhere to scheduled work hours
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle
