About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Serve as a liaison between Penn National Insurance and agents
- Act as relationship manager for agents, regional underwriting teams, and corporate departments
- Manage commercial lines agency planning and agency management initiatives for assigned agents
- Collaborate with and support Underwriters and RVPs on small business and mid-market renewal decisions and branch initiatives
- Directly underwrite mid-market new business
- Drive profitable commercial lines growth in premium volume and policy count
- Evaluate assigned agents’ strengths and weaknesses and facilitate new business action plans
- Train agents on Penn National Insurance commercial lines products, policies, procedures, and services
- Develop agency forces to pre-qualify, rate, and bind profitable commercial lines business
- Review new business quote requests for acceptability under underwriting authority and company guidelines
- Communicate underwriting decisions, techniques, policy forms, coverages, and risk acceptability
- Document underwriting files, decisions, actions, and follow-up requirements
- Build relationships with agents, underwriting teams, claims teams, and corporate departments
- Evaluate prospective agents and submit written recommendations to the Regional Vice President
- Visit agencies to discuss underwriting matters and develop new business
- Monitor agency growth, profitability, compliance, and company initiatives
- Profile commercial lines books of business and develop profitability plans
- Facilitate agency reviews and implement corrective actions
- Establish account pricing within underwriting authority and company guidelines
- Order and analyze loss control reports, financial reports, MVRs, and other underwriting reports
- Evaluate and secure facultative reinsurance when needed
- Contribute to underwriting policies, procedures, and guidelines
- Provide agency training on programs, products, services, and systems
- Develop annual agency/company marketing plans
- Analyze territory profitability, premium growth, and agency representation
- Apply, compile, manipulate, and analyze data to solve business problems
- Perform other duties assigned by the President-Partners Mutual or Regional Vice President
Requirements
What you’ll need- Four year college degree preferred
- Continuing education in specialized insurance courses such as IIA, AU, CPCU, and CIC preferred as applicable
- Maintenance of an active agent’s P&C license in domiciled state preferred
- Minimum of five years property/casualty commercial underwriting required
- Minimum of three years’ marketing experience with a Property and Casualty carrier preferred
- Agency or broker experience with heavy concentration in underwriting exposure/risk and marketing may substitute for carrier experience
- Technical underwriting knowledge of commercial lines of business written by Penn National Insurance
- Effective oral and written communication skills for highly technical information
- Proven sales, negotiations, and solution-selling skills
- Working knowledge of agency and company automation systems
- Fundamental knowledge of personal computers, with emphasis on Microsoft Office Suite
- Exceptional customer service skills
- Good financial analysis skills
- Excellent time management skills
- Strong commercial lines underwriting analysis skills
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle
- Must be able to travel, with overnight stays required
- Must be able to maintain acceptable attendance and adhere to scheduled work hours
- Must be able to communicate effectively with internal and external clients
- Must be able to present information to individuals and groups
- Must be able to interpret and apply concepts that may or may not be based upon established guidelines
