About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Conduct on-site loss control surveys and virtual meetings for prospective and written commercial lines accounts within a designated geographic territory
- Gain a thorough understanding of account operations
- Handle large and/or complex accounts
- Complete reports and documentation for account visits to support underwriting decisions
- Visit facilities to assess operations, hazards/exposures and safety program effectiveness
- Determine compliance and evaluate safety programs based on OSHA, NFPA, DOT, ANSI and applicable state and local codes
- Conduct agency visits to promote loss control services and initiatives
- Provide loss control consulting services and apply safety management principles to reduce, eliminate or control hazards/exposures
- Provide on-site training as needed
- Conduct basic industrial hygiene and health surveys, including noise and ergonomic assessments
- Attend branch large loss meetings and other meetings requiring loss control expertise
- Develop, submit and discuss recommendations with customers to improve conditions and mitigate or control hazards
- Assist with technical training and field evaluations of other Loss Control Consultants
- Assist with classroom technical training for Loss Control staff and underwriters
- Manage vendor Loss Control work within assigned territories as requested
- Assist in training Commercial Underwriters or provide consulting support
- Maintain direct contact with underwriting and claims personnel, agents and insureds
Requirements
What you’ll need- Candidate must reside within the territory, mainly within the state of Alabama; ideally the Birmingham or Montgomery area
- 4 years in property/casualty loss control required, conducting loss control surveys and performing loss control consulting work on written accounts
- Experience handling larger and more complex accounts
- Bachelor’s degree, with a major in safety, science or engineering preferred
- Continuing education through specialty courses such as ALCM and ARM and certifications such as ASP, CSP, CIH or OHST preferred
- Proficient technical and professional knowledge of loss control/safety for all types of commercial lines and programs
- In-depth knowledge of operational practices for industrial, construction, institutional, commercial, educational and habitational occupancies
- Good understanding of commercial insurance coverages
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Basic training and presentation skills
- Good oral and written communication skills, including presenting information of varying complexity clearly
- Excellent customer service skills
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Good PC skills, especially Microsoft Office Suite
- Must be able to reach with arms and hands
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb ladders and stairs
- May need to navigate uneven or unpaved terrain
- Must be able to perform computer-based tasks and access digital information, including through assistive technologies
- Must be able to use office equipment and automated systems accurately
- Must be able to communicate effectively with internal and external clients
- Must be able to present information to individuals and groups
- Must be able to interpret and apply concepts
- Must maintain acceptable attendance and adhere to scheduled work hours
- Must have a valid driver’s license and operate a motor vehicle
- Must be able to travel, with overnight stays required
