About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Build software at scale that transforms how organizations use data
- Participate throughout the product lifecycle, from ideation and design through prototyping and production delivery
- Collaborate with technical and non-technical teammates to understand customer problems and build solutions
- Architect systems enabling novel workflows
- Tune system performance for low-latency operational outcomes
- Design and implement query planning and optimization capabilities
- Extend execution engines with capabilities involving query operators, parallelism, memory management, and data movement
- Develop Foundry Iceberg catalog and engine integrations, including metadata, transactions, reads, and writes
- Build shared transformation semantics and execution interfaces across Foundry products and platform services
- Improve incremental processing while preserving correctness
- Evaluate and integrate advances in open-source data systems
- Investigate correctness and performance issues and build regression-preventing tests and benchmarks
- Work with product teams and customers to translate operational needs into engine capabilities
- Potentially participate in Frontline, working directly with customers and owning end-to-end execution of high-stakes projects
Requirements
What you’ll need- 4+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems
- Engineering background in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Physics, or a similar field, or equivalent practical experience
- Strong coding skills in one or more languages such as Java, Rust, Scala, or C++
- Experience developing database engines, distributed data processing systems, storage systems, or comparable infrastructure
- Experience with query planning, execution, or performance optimization
- Strong foundations in algorithms, data structures, and concurrency
- Experience diagnosing correctness and performance problems in complex systems
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively across teams, incorporate feedback, and maintain a high bar for quality
- Experience building or extending systems such as Spark, DataFusion, or Iceberg is valued
- Open-source contribution experience is valued but not required
