About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Work with Assignment Editors, Producers, and Associate Producers to gather news elements for breaking news, on-air packages, and digital stories
  • Track wire services, social media, and other sources
  • Extensively research topics and adjust quickly to developing stories
  • Flag and fact-check stories and alert the Bureau team to new developments
  • Log Capitol Hill hearings, speeches, press conferences, and other events
  • Disseminate editorial notes to the news division
  • Craft language for professional news posts across social media platforms
  • Periodically field-produce events on Capitol Hill, the White House, and other special shoots and interviews
  • Maintain up-to-date bureau contact and source lists

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Robust written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid organizational and customer service skills
  • Detail-oriented, able to multitask, and able to stay calm and proactive under tight deadlines
  • Deep interest in Washington politics and policy
  • Understanding of the three branches of government
  • Proficiency with Facebook, X, Snapchat, Instagram, and YouTube
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related discipline preferred
  • Stellar editorial judgment
  • Internship or comparable experience in broadcast, cable, or digital news is a plus
  • Knowledge of broadcast networks, stations, and markets is a plus
  • Availability to work night and weekend schedules
