About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead the Bookkeeping team’s day-to-day functions, including workload assignment, portfolio balancing, throughput, and coverage
  • Set, document, and enforce GAAP-aligned bookkeeping quality standards
  • Conduct regular quality audits of client books and turn findings into coaching
  • Complete new account setups, clean-up projects, and monthly book closures
  • Perform bank and credit card data imports, journal entries, account reconciliations, transaction categorization, and general ledger review and corrections
  • Serve as the highest bookkeeping escalation point for complex customer issues involving payroll, payroll tax, and accounting
  • Track and report team performance, quality, and capacity to the Head of Operations
  • Represent the Bookkeeping team with Accounting, Product, and internal teams on workflows, tools, and pain points
  • Analyze processes and workflows to improve efficiency and reduce manual work
  • Develop new-hire training and continuing education content with the Training Department
  • Coach and develop team members through weekly 1:1s and performance check-ins
  • Interview and hire new team members
  • Deliver performance evaluations and follow the disciplinary process
  • Maintain professionalism and uphold Patriot’s core values

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 3+ years of hands-on bookkeeping experience, including monthly closes, reconciliations, and clean-up projects
  • 2+ years of experience managing or leading a team, including coaching, performance feedback, and accountability conversations
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP and USA-based accounting, payroll, and payroll tax
  • Ability to review books, identify errors or incomplete work, and explain corrections
  • Sound judgment and confidence to address work that does not meet standards
  • Ability to report on team performance clearly and candidly using data
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills with employees and customers
  • Proven ability to handle escalated customer issues and customer follow-ups
  • Comfort with technology and ability to learn new software and tools quickly
  • Ability to remain composed and solution-focused during challenging interactions
  • Ability to stay organized, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively
  • Capacity to accept and use constructive criticism
  • Self-motivated and eager to continue learning
