About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead the engineering organization and own technical strategy, architecture, quality, security, delivery, and engineering team growth
  • Make key architectural decisions, including major technology choices, build-versus-buy decisions, site scalability, and carrier integrations
  • Conduct product and infrastructure security reviews, vendor security questionnaires, and audits
  • Serve as the technical point of contact and leader with key partners
  • Own release management and deployment, including CI/CD, release cadence, rollbacks, and production stability
  • Prioritize technical debt and refactoring against feature velocity
  • Own QA and testing processes, including automated coverage, manual QA, and release quality standards
  • Manage on-call rotations, escalation paths, incident response, and postmortems
  • Develop engineers through 1:1s, performance feedback, career development, and removing blockers
  • Build and onboard the engineering team as the company grows
  • Approve internal software based on cost, security, and fit, including renewals and replacements
  • Manage engineering tooling and infrastructure spend, including cloud costs, licenses, and consolidation opportunities
  • Own and evolve the company’s AI policy and best practices and lead AI adoption
  • Partner on OKRs, product priorities, technical debt, delivery timelines, design QA, security reviews, integrations, and reliable data flow
  • Report directly to the Chief Product Officer

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience
  • 5+ years managing engineers
  • 2+ years in a senior engineering leadership role (Director, or senior-most technical leader), ideally at an early stage startup or fast-moving environment
  • Experience with TypeScript, Next.js, Node, GraphQL, Postgres, and AWS
  • Proven ownership of technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for a production consumer product
  • Experience building or scaling the team that delivered a production consumer product
  • Comfortable reviewing PRs, reading code deeply, and jumping into an incident
  • Experience with application security and third-party compliance, including security reviews, vendor questionnaires, and audits
  • Track record of excellent cross-department communication and relationships leading to business success
  • Practical enthusiasm for AI-assisted development
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
  • Preferred: experience in insurance or fintech, or with partner API integrations
  • Extra points if you love animals and believe pet healthcare is a serious, underserved problem
