About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Design, develop, and implement payment solutions for stable and consistent payment processing
Support and extend the existing Perl-based payment gateway
Design and build high-performance Python microservices
Architect and implement scalable, distributed Python services to replace legacy components
Integrate and manage third-party APIs and external payment services
Ensure seamless transaction flows and robust error handling
Lead code reviews and drive engineering best practices
Identify system bottlenecks and improve performance and scalability
Collaborate with DevOps to improve GitLab CI/CD pipelines
Architect solutions using AWS services such as Lambda and ECS
Apply a product mindset to understand business logic, user impact, and feature purpose
Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues in distributed systems
Maintain zero-downtime production operations for merchants
Report to the Technical Lead

Requirements

What you’ll need

5+ years of backend engineering experience with deep Python expertise
FastAPI and AsyncIO preferred
Genuine eagerness to learn and work within Perl production code is mandatory
Experience building and scaling microservices architectures and high-throughput systems
Deep understanding of third-party API integrations, webhooks, callbacks, idempotency, and retry policies
Strong experience with Docker/containerization
Solid grasp of AWS cloud infrastructure, including Lambda, SQS/SNS, and cloud networking
Familiarity with event-driven architecture and messaging systems such as Kafka and RabbitMQ
Track record of owning features from design to production
Enjoyment of supporting and mentoring other engineers
Strong written and verbal English communication skills
Ability to work onsite in Cyprus with relocation support
