About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Extend offers and ensure that all related correspondence and onboarding requirements for craftspersons are met
  • Actively source candidates through a variety of channels to improve candidate quality and maintain a balanced pipeline for hard-to-fill roles
  • Work closely with project teams to review and understand project demands and needs
  • Ensure required safety training for new hires is complete and pre-employment testing is accurately completed
  • Identify training needs and coordinate safety training for new hires on each jobsite
  • Guide and coach supervisors through progressive disciplinary processes for craftspersons, including performance improvement plans and progressive disciplinary strategies up to and including termination
  • Liaise with union representation, work with unions and management to resolve grievances, and investigate and evaluate union complaints
  • Analyze and handle labor agreements
  • Advance issues meeting predefined criteria and assess risk and sensitivity to determine when to involve labor relations management
  • Advise management on contract administration, employee discipline, and grievance procedures
  • Present the company’s position during arbitration and labor negotiations
  • Lead the collective bargaining team as management’s spokesperson
  • Work with unions to develop project labor agreements establishing rates, travel allowances, and other terms
  • Lead administration and implementation of drug and alcohol programs, including training, compliance, and substance abuse assistance

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Craftsperson certificate or bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred
  • Certificate in negotiation or equivalent experience preferred
  • 10 years of progressive experience in lead hand/foreperson role and/or labor relations or a related field preferred
  • 5+ years of supervisory experience
  • Ability to effectively lead a team comprising of craft recruiters, workforce specialists, and workforce supervisors
  • Seen as a trusted advisor with outstanding relationship leadership skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with key partners and handle confidential information
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to negotiate and present content and ideas that influence a favorable outcome
  • Demonstrates knowledge and experience with full-cycle recruitment and development of talent acquisition strategies and Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) applications
  • Knowledge of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), Workers Compensation, and alcohol and drug testing protocol and laws
  • Extensive experience with collective bargaining, labor negotiations, mediation, formal complex investigations and providing appropriate recommendations
  • Experience building and implementing a labor relations strategy for the organization
  • Knowledge of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)
  • Experience with succession planning for departments and/or divisions
  • Validated critical-thinking skills
