About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Administer and maintain Windows Server and Linux/UNIX operating systems across enterprise hardware and multiple physical data centers
- Administer VMware vCloud, vSphere, vCenter, Enterprise Plus, vROPS, Log Insight, and SCVMM environments
- Administer and optimize AWS environments, including EC2, S3, CloudFormation, and Application Migration Service
- Provide guidance on cloud and cluster computing architectures and deploy advanced cloud computing and large-data analytics capabilities
- Lead and support workload migrations from on-premises infrastructure to AWS, Azure, and GCP
- Document migration paths, develop runbooks, and execute cutovers with minimal-to-no customer downtime
- Administer NAS and SAN storage, enterprise backup software, Backup-to-Cloud replication, and disaster recovery solutions
- Advise OCIO leadership and stakeholders on cloud and hybrid architectures, system and memory optimization, workload placement, and resource utilization
- Apply OS, hypervisor, and application security patches and maintain DOI/USGS security compliance
- Design and maintain monitoring dashboards using vROPS, Datadog, CloudWatch, or comparable tools
- Troubleshoot and resolve performance and availability incidents across physical, virtual, and cloud infrastructure
- Use Kubernetes, Jenkins, Ansible, or comparable tools to support modernization, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code deployments
- Maintain architecture diagrams, configuration records, migration plans, and runbooks
- Collaborate using Jira, Confluence, and Microsoft Teams
- Serve as a technical advisor and hands-on administrator supporting the USGS OCIO
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree and 10 years professional experience, or a Master's degree and 8 years professional experience, or an Associate's degree and 12 years professional experience, or a high school diploma/equivalent and 14 years professional experience
- U.S. Citizenship required
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
- All work must be performed within the United States
- Extensive experience in systems administration across hybrid IT environments
- Expertise administering VMware vCenter, ESXi/vSphere, vROPS, and VMware Log Insight
- Hands-on experience with AWS EC2, S3, CloudFormation, and workload migration tooling
- Proficiency administering Windows Server 2016/2019/2022 and Linux/UNIX environments, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, and Ubuntu
- Experience managing NAS, SAN, and enterprise hardware platforms
- Working knowledge of enterprise backup and replication solutions; experience designing or implementing Backup-to-Cloud and DR strategies
- Familiarity with AWS, Azure, and GCP
- Experience with Active Directory, Group Policy, PKI, and enterprise IAM
- Ability to perform zero-downtime upgrades, migrations, and hardware decommissions
- Strong written and verbal skills; ability to produce technical documentation and present to technical peers and senior leadership
- Preferred: Master's degree in a related technical field
- Preferred certifications include AWS Certified Solutions Architect, VMware Certified Professional, Professional Scrum Master, AWS Certified AI Practitioner, and Google Generative AI credentials
- Preferred experience with Kubernetes, Jenkins, Ansible, Datadog, Splunk, Elasticsearch, Pivotal Cloud Foundry, Federal/USGS environments, Oracle databases on Linux, and team leadership
