About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Assist Real Property Appraisers in appraising real property by obtaining property inventories and measurements
  • Inspect real properties and related documentation by examining records, visiting properties, reviewing diagrams, and taking measurements
  • Examine public records, tax maps, tax assessor records, and transactions to gather tax-related property information
  • Measure wall lengths, offsets, and corner angles using a tape measure and miter gauge
  • Gather information from building plans to evaluate property characteristics, construction materials, structural information, and functional design
  • Perform administrative duties including writing reports, maintaining files, drafting correspondence, communicating information, and providing assistance
  • Assist with real property valuations and assessments by monitoring trends, documenting property characteristics, and calculating estimates
  • Draw land and improvement diagrams for appraisal reports
  • Monitor trends such as interest rates and mortgage availability that may affect real property market prices
  • Visit properties throughout Jefferson County and work in both field and office settings

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Driver’s license
  • Experience providing customer service, including providing information, explaining or enforcing policies and procedures, and dealing with difficult or irate customers
  • Experience performing work requiring knowledge of basic construction materials such as brick, wood, or concrete, including carpentry, home improvement, repairs, construction, real estate, or appraisal
  • Ability to pass the Alabama Manual course and the IAAO 101 Fundamentals of Real Property within two years of hire
  • Experience in real estate sales as a Real Estate Agent, Realtor, or Broker is desirable
  • Experience as a Home Inspector is desirable
  • Licensed as an Appraisal Trainee through the Alabama Real Estate Appraisers Board is desirable
