About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as the senior engineering authority for public infrastructure planning, design, construction, and maintenance
  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Oversee capital improvement initiatives involving transportation systems, stormwater management, and municipal infrastructure
  • Provide strategic direction and ensure compliance with regulations, engineering standards, and best practices
  • Review and approve technical designs
  • Manage project budgets and schedules
  • Coordinate with contractors and consultants
  • Advise executive leadership and elected officials on infrastructure planning and policy
  • Prepare, monitor, and administer departmental or organizational budgets
  • Enforce contractor and developer permits
  • Investigate public infrastructure complaints and provide information to the public and government agencies
  • Review permit applications, plans, and proposed construction-plan changes
  • Oversee public infrastructure construction projects through all phases
  • Develop project scopes and oversee contractor and engineering-firm procurement
  • Oversee and participate in infrastructure project design
  • Supervise staff by assigning work, directing duties, monitoring progress, and providing feedback or training

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Driver’s license
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Alabama, OR ability to obtain an Alabama PE License through reciprocity within 6 months of being hired
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil Engineering or a closely related Engineering field from an ABET accredited program
  • Professional Engineering experience
  • Experience as a lead project manager directly responsible for successful design or construction of complex public works infrastructure projects
