  • Direct and participate in the inspection of all electrical installations in Jefferson County
  • Ensure compliance with related codes and ordinances
  • Contact appropriate parties regarding violations found during inspections
  • Explain code requirements
  • Issue stop work notices for unauthorized, substandard, or code-violating work
  • Oversee the production and quality of work performed by subordinate employees
  • Enforce codes and ordinances by comparing potential violations with applicable requirements
  • Research and review codes, ordinances, notices, permitting, new materials, and code amendments
  • Conduct electrical inspections against plan requirements
  • Conduct general contractor inspections, verify permits, review plans, and issue Certificates of Occupancy
  • Conduct inspections related to life safety, handicap accessibility, and natural disasters
  • Review construction plans for code compliance
  • Pursue professional development and maintain current knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and guidelines
  • Supervise staff by assigning and distributing work, directing duties, monitoring progress, providing feedback, and training

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Driver's license
  • Master Electrician Certification from the State of Alabama, Jefferson County, or the City of Birmingham
  • State of Alabama Electrical Contractor license
  • Experience inspecting the work of other electricians
  • Experience using and interpreting the National Electrical Code (NEC) for inspectors, contractors, and/or homeowners
  • Experience interpreting and comprehending engineering and architectural plans
  • Ability to perform occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or running
  • Ability to occasionally lift items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
