About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead the operations of the Personal Property Section
  • Plan, direct, and coordinate staff work to ensure personal property is accurately assessed and properly classified
  • Oversee a department or division and coordinate staff activities
  • Review subordinate work for technical accuracy and compliance with governing requirements
  • Perform administrative duties, including writing reports, maintaining files, drafting correspondence, communicating information, and providing assistance
  • Assist taxpayers with personal property issues, including completing forms, answering questions, and resolving complaints
  • Oversee and/or conduct business inspections to identify taxable personal property and assess appropriate tax amounts
  • Develop, interpret, and/or implement goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and laws for the department
  • Gather evidence and review documentation related to protests of assessed property values and court cases
  • Make decisions and render judgments based on property-related evidence in response to protests and court cases
  • Supervise staff by assigning and distributing work, directing duties, monitoring progress, and providing feedback and/or training
  • Engage in professional development and maintain awareness of developments, practices, rules, laws, policies, and guidelines

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Possession of a State Certified Appraisal Certificate (i.e., from any state)
  • Coursework in basic principles of accounting
  • Experience creating spreadsheets to perform calculations
  • Experience performing audits
  • Experience appraising equipment, furniture, and fixtures
  • Experience in disputes of valuation (e.g., protests, appeals, litigation)
  • Experience with Alabama Tax Code Title 40 (Revenue and Taxation) (targeted qualification)
