About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Oversee the planning, direction, coordination, and inspection of engineering activities related to the City’s traffic, roadway, and drainage systems
- Review engineering plans and drawings to ensure proposed construction projects are feasible and can be constructed as designed
- Collaborate with contractors, consultants, and internal professionals to review plans, identify concerns, and recommend revisions
- Review private and municipal construction projects for compliance with state, county, and City of Mountain Brook codes, regulations, and requirements
- Enforce applicable City ordinances and ensure engineering and construction activities meet established standards
- Provide technical guidance to engineering staff and contractors
- Review and analyze plans and engineering studies
- Review and approve plans for major commercial and residential developments
- Investigate and respond to citizen infrastructure requests and complaints
- Inspect construction sites and monitor projects for compliance with codes, ordinances, and laws
- Oversee contractor bid announcements, collection, assessment, and acceptance
- Supervise staff by assigning work, monitoring progress, and providing feedback or training
- Prepare, monitor, and administer departmental or organizational budgets
Requirements
What you’ll need- Driver’s license
- Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Alabama, or ability to obtain an Alabama PE License through reciprocity within 6 months of being hired
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil Engineering or another closely related Engineering field
- Degree from an ABET accredited program
- Professional Engineering experience
- Experience as a lead project manager directly responsible for successful design or construction of complex public works infrastructure projects
- Experience working with county and state organizations such as ALDOT, ADEM, and SWMA
- Experience in reviewing bids
- Experience preparing and evaluating Requests for Proposals (RFPs)
- Experience administering contracts
- Experience coordinating with contractors on public infrastructure projects
