About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform administrative and technical activities to ensure the design and functionality of GIS hardware and software resources
  • Apply GIS mapping and addressing terminology, methods, practices, and indexing standards
  • Coordinate hardware, software, data cabling activities, and service vendor contracts
  • Plan and organize system development through subordinate staff
  • Coordinate with subordinate supervisors to plan employee schedules and assignment timelines
  • Attend meetings, track productivity, create reports, and represent department findings in court
  • Maintain equipment, physical files, and digital files
  • Suggest or create department policy changes and create or edit procedures
  • Enter and modify basic and complex records in GIS and external databases or on paper maps
  • Research and verify GIS information accuracy and completeness and assign records to staff
  • Engage in cross-department and municipality projects, establishing goals and deadlines and communicating progress
  • Supervise staff by assigning work, monitoring progress, providing feedback, and conducting training
  • Participate in new GIS vendor software or equipment selection
  • Provide service to internal and external customers

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Work experience supervising or working in a lead capacity in a GIS or IT environment, including training and reviewing work of coworkers or staff
  • Work experience creating and editing GIS databases, including fields, dropdown options, SQL or Oracle programming, and platforms such as Esri, ArcGIS, or MapInfo (Option A)
  • Work experience maintaining a GIS database, including spatial analysis and data extraction (Option A)
  • Work experience with database reporting software such as Crystal Reports or ArcGIS data reporting (Option A)
  • Associate degree in Geographic Information Systems or a related IT field (Option B)
  • Geographic Information Systems Certificate or Certification from an accredited organization, such as Alabama Certified Mapper Designation, US Armed Forces, GISCI, or GISP (Option C)
  • GIS Specialist in the Merit System (Option D)
