About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform highly technical clinical laboratory work in chemistry, hematology and coagulation, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, and/or urinalysis.
- Collect, receive, evaluate, and process patient specimens for laboratory testing.
- Troubleshoot, maintain, calibrate, and conduct quality assurance testing on laboratory equipment.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers and engage with patients to collect blood, urine, and other samples.
- Analyze control specimens to verify accurate analyzer and testing equipment measurements.
- Resolve analyzer performance problems, unacceptable quality-control results, and instrument malfunctions.
- Maintain storage equipment and safely store specimens, reagents, controls, and other supplies.
- Monitor room, incubator, refrigerator, and freezer temperatures.
- Maintain chemical inventory records and rotate stock to prevent expiration.
- Assess specimen adequacy and notify physicians when another aspiration is needed.
- Prepare slides and preserve specimens for biopsies and cultures.
- Print and attach shipping and barcode labels to specimens.
- Verify patient information on specimen containers against laboratory orders.
- Perform immunology or serology testing, including flu, RPR, and H. pylori testing.
- Perform microscopic urine examinations and urinalysis.
- Analyze test results to assist physicians with diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Report communicable and infectious diseases to the State Health Department.
- Follow CLIA requirements for clinical laboratory practices and procedures.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Laboratory experience with waived or moderate complexity testing.
- Ability to perform work involving sustained periods of walking or standing.
- May be required to lift items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to work with medical laboratory tools and equipment.
- Ability to work around bio-hazard materials, including blood borne pathogens, body fluids, and communicable diseases.
- Compliance with Alabama Department of Health regulations.
- Compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) regulations regarding clinical laboratory practices and procedures.
