About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Reviews drawings, maps, surveys, and applications for zoning, subdivisions, building, addressing, and construction permits for compliance with codes, ordinances, and departmental requirements
- Communicates with contractors, realtors, engineers, developers, and the public to answer questions and explain ordinances
- Processes re-zoning, subdivision, and variance cases through research, analysis, and findings
- Acts as staff liaison to committees and commissions, gathering feedback, relaying information, and delivering presentations
- Participates in strategic, current, and long-range planning and ordinance revisions
- Manages federal and state project-based grants, including scope, deliverables, budgets, timelines, and contingency plans
- Manages hazard mitigation, disaster recovery, watershed, and floodplain planning programs
- Researches adopted city or county long-range plans for consistency with site development projects
- Reviews and, when appropriate, approves site and development plans for adherence to zoning regulations
- Conducts or participates in neighborhood and public involvement meetings
- Interprets codes and ordinances for compliance with federal regulations and programs
Requirements
What you’ll need- Driver's license
- Option A: Experience writing, developing, or preparing hazard mitigation plans and long-range planning elements, such as land-use planning, environmental planning, and demographics
- Option A: Experience collecting and analyzing data (e.g., demographic, land-use survey, market, census) in preparation for a planning study
- Option A: Experience writing, developing, preparing, and interpreting current planning functions or development regulations, including zoning, subdivision, and floodplain regulations
- Option A: Experience implementing long-range, short-range plans and hazard mitigation plans and developing appropriate regulations to specific situations
- Option A: Experience developing and delivering presentations to the public, public bodies, and other stakeholders
- Option B: Bachelor's degree in Planning, Urban Planning, Emergency Management, Urban Studies, Public Administration, Environmental Management, or a related degree
- Option B: Experience writing, developing, or preparing hazard mitigation plans and/or long-range planning elements
- Option B: Experience developing and delivering presentations to the public, public bodies, and other stakeholders
- Primarily sedentary work; occasional walking or standing and occasional light lifting of up to 25 lbs
- Work conducted mostly indoors with periodic field visits to external indoor or outdoor locations
