About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Plan, organize, and direct the collection of various revenue sources, including ad valorem tax, property tax, and condemnation revenue
  • Maintain relationships with financial institutions to ensure assets are protected
  • Prepare, monitor, and administer departmental or organizational budgets
  • Review spending trends, expenditure reports, and financial data to ensure expenditures remain within annual budgetary limits
  • Create, review, and revise policies and procedures for regulatory compliance
  • Supervise staff by assigning and distributing work, directing duties, monitoring progress, and providing feedback or training
  • Oversee daily collection operations for current and delinquent ad valorem, real, and personal property taxes
  • Plan and direct the collection and distribution of taxes and condemnation revenues
  • Oversee biweekly distribution of collected funds to the State of Alabama, Jefferson County, municipalities, the board of education, and other agencies

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting or finance, or a business-related degree with at least 18 semester hours in accounting, finance, tax law, or a combination of coursework from these disciplines
  • Experience with municipal/governmental tax collections
  • Experience supervising employees in a taxation or accounting environment, including training employees, reviewing work, giving performance appraisals, and approving time off
  • Experience interpreting and applying case law, state codes, or legal opinions related to tax law or changes in tax law
  • Experience balancing and reconciling accounts
  • Experience managing, developing, or providing input to create a budget
  • Experience creating financial reports and providing recommendations based on financial information
  • Ability to work with applicable legislation, regulations, standards, guidelines, and Alabama state code
