About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead, develop and maintain relationships with state governments, regulatory agencies, elected and appointed officials, and non-governmental organizations
- Advocate for projects, business growth, operations and project execution support, with a particular focus on the Northeast
- Track, report and influence state legislation, regulations and policies affecting Williams
- Align advocacy with business priorities for existing and prospective operational areas
- Coordinate selected policies and issues at the federal level and with other team members
- Develop and implement a comprehensive issues management process
- Establish and cultivate executive relationships with state and local government leaders, policymakers and regulatory agencies
- Influence relevant policies and regulations and enhance the company’s reputation
- Build relationships to establish trust, mitigate obstacles, convey priorities and strategies, and sustain efforts in new communities
- Provide leadership with updates on legislative and regulatory developments
- Develop company position papers, collateral, fact sheets and presentations
- Participate in technical partner groups, industry trade associations, coalitions and advisory/industry committees
- Drive agendas for business impact
- Support implementation plans and tools for new regulations or rules
- Develop strategies for addressing high-risk issues
- Educate state and local officials, peers and key influencers about the energy industry and Williams’ business
- Travel to states or cities within the coverage area as needed
- Manage outside consultants and collaborate with internal and external audiences
- Understand and manage department budgets
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in business, political science or communications
- Minimum of seven (7) years' direct experience in government affairs, customer/business partner relations or related field
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
- Safety as the utmost priority
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications and PC skills
- Understanding of energy policy, specifically legislation and/or the regulatory process
- Ability to work with elected officials across the political spectrum to build support and consensus
- Understanding of corporate communications tools and implementation with internal and external audiences
- Detailed understanding of the legislative process/rules and government and regulatory affairs and outreach
- Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills
- Ability to establish rapport with senior leaders and officials
- Ability to work under high pressure in a dynamic environment and collaborate across a matrixed organization
- Approximately 50% travel expected
- Preferred: Master’s degree in law, business, political science or communications
- Preferred: Minimum of ten (10) years' experience as staff in a State House, Governor's office, or federal congressional office within the specific geographic region assigned
- Preferred: Experience in political or issues campaigns
