About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Oversee the treatment, collection, distribution and daily operations of plant facilities in accordance with federal, state and local regulations
  • Plan and develop work schedules, equipment usage schedules and system maintenance procedures
  • Ensure plant and operators comply with regulations through operational testing and meticulous record keeping
  • Inspect wells, pumps, motors, valves, electrical panels, storage tanks, mixing and holding tanks, chemical feed systems, metering devices and plant maintenance systems daily
  • Maintain distribution systems, hydrants and valves, including flushing operations
  • Maintain a safe work environment and ensure equipment is in proper working condition
  • Maintain and verify SCADA systems through manual testing
  • Act as a technical resource to field personnel and engage in field issues
  • Review work in progress and completed work for compliance with instructions
  • Participate in departmental and other meetings
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned
  • Supervise direct reports

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Five years of experience in water plant operations including three years in a supervisory role
  • Knowledge and understanding of applicable water regulations
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles, practices and techniques
  • Familiarity with Federal, State and Local Rules and Regulations pertaining to public water systems
  • Skill in estimating time and materials common to the trade
  • Ability to develop capital projects to improve plant operations and treatment methods and equipment
  • Supervisory skills to hire qualified employees, provide professional development, administer performance management and disciplinary processes, and address employee relations
  • Ability to supervise and develop the assigned team to meet production/service goals while adhering to safety policies and rules
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including presentations and responding to inquiries
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, reasoning, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Human relation skills to build effective relationships with team, customers and public
  • Advanced computer literacy, including word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software
  • Knowledge of business English, including vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Mathematical skills involving fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions
  • Ability to establish priorities and solve business, operational and strategic management problems
  • Flexibility to respond to changing priorities and handle multiple projects
  • Associate’s degree preferred; combination of education and relevant experience considered
  • Public Water Treatment System NJ T-3 certification (required)
  • Public Water Distribution System NJ W-2 certification (required)
  • Federal security clearance may be required
  • Valid driver’s license may be required
  • Ability to monitor gauges, controls and computer systems
  • Ability to lift materials up to 35 pounds, bend, stoop and climb ladders
