About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Take initiative on ambiguous or unowned problems, identify root causes and drive technical decisions
Work with the Engineering Leadership Team, Head of Engineering and Head of Programme to align solutions with wider technical direction
Deliver feature development, platform improvements and infrastructure initiatives across concurrent workstreams
Balance competing priorities while maintaining code quality and delivery pace
Champion and embed code review, testing, CI/CD and documentation practices
Support adoption of new tools, processes and ways of working
Mentor less experienced engineers through pairing, code review and informal guidance
Develop and maintain PHP Symfony/Laravel applications with Vue.js front ends
Work with AWS infrastructure including EC2 and EKS
Contribute hands-on to multiple projects while helping set technical direction
Report directly to the Head of Engineering

Requirements

What you’ll need

Senior-level software engineering experience
Experience with PHP, Symfony and/or Laravel, or strong experience with comparable frameworks such as Rails, Django or .NET
Experience with Vue.js, React, Angular or comparable JavaScript frameworks
Comfortable working across JavaScript, SCSS and Twig, or a similar front-to-back stack
Solid working knowledge of AWS, including EC2, EKS/containers, RDS or similar services
Background in DevOps, platform or infrastructure engineering
Experience working across multiple projects and shifting priorities
Ability to work autonomously and influence without authority
Experience mentoring or supporting the development of other engineers
Familiarity with observability tooling such as Grafana and Prometheus/Mimir is a plus
Pragmatic approach to trade-offs between speed, technical debt and long-term maintainability
Ability to handle ambiguous or unowned problems with minimal guidance
Collaborative approach to technical disagreement
Cost-conscious approach to cloud infrastructure
Comfort working with legacy and end-of-life systems
Security-conscious approach to access control, dependency hygiene and data handling
