About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead regional underwriting operations to support financial and operational goals
  • Supervise assigned underwriting operations in accordance with the Company’s underwriting philosophy, business model, budget, policies, and procedures
  • Develop professional development plans and monitor day-to-day execution for team members
  • Underwrite assigned books of accounts, including reviewing and analyzing financial statements
  • Analyze risks for new and renewal business and decide whether to accept, modify, or decline business within approved authority
  • Assume lead underwriting responsibilities and/or management oversight for assigned Inova programs
  • Provide referral underwriting expertise and review/audit files to guide underwriting strategies
  • Coach, develop, evaluate, and manage performance of line underwriters and make salary adjustment recommendations
  • Manage progressive discipline processes in collaboration with Human Resources and management
  • Cultivate relationships with agents, policyholders, and internal departments
  • Promote Eastern products and services and identify new business opportunities
  • Review monthly reports, performance metrics, results, and file reviews; report unit results and recommend adjustments
  • Lead or participate in task forces and projects and plan staff training programs
  • Coordinate external presentations and support positive public relations
  • Run regular unit meetings and attend team, adverse account review, and Inova meetings
  • Champion return-to-wellness initiatives with team members, agents, clients, claims representatives, and risk management consultants

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, insurance, or related field required
  • Five years of progressive experience in underwriting or underwriting management required
  • Workers’ compensation experience preferred
  • CPCU or advanced certification preferred
  • Ability to attend insurance and industry/business functions
  • Ability to participate in presentations to potential clients/agents
  • Ability to travel as necessitated by business needs
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office computer applications
  • Ability to learn new computer software applications
  • Advanced analytical ability to analyze and interpret information for profitable risk decisions
  • Attention to detail, prioritization, and deadline management
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strategic thinking ability
  • Ability to analyze competition, identify trends, and make recommendations
  • Ability to assess urgency and importance and take appropriate action
