About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Own backend and infrastructure architecture and document key technical decisions
Define and maintain engineering standards for backend code, infrastructure, security, and deployment
Advise leadership and delivery teams on technical approach, risk, effort, and cost
Evaluate and select tools, services, and third-party partners
Share knowledge with the wider engineering team and support front-end developers
Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs using Python and PHP
Write clean, tested, maintainable code and establish backend review practices
Optimise application performance, reliability, and security
Design and integrate REST and GraphQL APIs
Collaborate with front-end developers on headless architecture and Contentful integrations
Design and own authentication and SSO integrations using OAuth 2, OpenID Connect, SAML, and Microsoft Entra ID
Lead database design and query optimisation
Design, deploy, and maintain primarily GCP-based cloud infrastructure
Build and manage Docker containerised environments
Support deployments on SaaS hosting platforms such as Vercel
Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines
Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting and lead incident response
Own infrastructure-as-code, cloud cost/performance optimisation, security, access management, backups, and disaster recovery
Maintain documentation and runbooks

Requirements

What you’ll need

5–7 years of experience
Proven senior-level backend development experience with strong commercial experience in Python and PHP
Strong hands-on experience with a major cloud provider, ideally GCP
Practical experience with Docker and containerised application deployment
Strong understanding of CI/CD and modern DevOps practices
Hands-on experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation
Solid knowledge of cloud security best practices
Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases
Strong experience designing and integrating REST and GraphQL APIs
Strong experience implementing SSO and authentication using OAuth 2, OpenID Connect, and SAML
Experience integrating with identity platforms such as Microsoft Entra ID
Experience collaborating with front-end developers on headless solutions and CMS platforms such as Contentful
Comfortable working across the full lifecycle from design through deployment to monitoring
Ability to work autonomously as the sole owner of a technical area
Excellent communication skills and ability to explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders and clients
Experience supporting front-end deployments on SaaS hosting platforms such as Vercel (desirable)
Familiarity with Kubernetes or other container orchestration (desirable)
Experience in an agency or client-facing environment (desirable)
Experience contributing to technical scoping, estimation, or pitches (desirable)
Prior experience mentoring engineers or leading technical initiatives (desirable)
