About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Formulate operational problems such as bandwidth allocation, routing, scheduling, capacity planning, and contention resolution as mathematical optimization models.
  • Implement optimization models in production code.
  • Modify and configure Grid directly against customer engagement requirements.
  • Write new solvers, heuristics, and decomposition schemes where existing capabilities are insufficient.
  • Select and defend the use of exact methods, heuristics, metaheuristics, decomposition, or hybrid approaches.
  • Profile, reformulate, tighten relaxations, warm-start, and cut models to meet live runtime constraints.
  • Build test harnesses, benchmark instances, and solution-quality measures, including edge-case validation.
  • Debug degraded solution quality, infeasibility, and performance regressions in deployed environments.
  • Document formulations, assumptions, and model behavior for government program review.
  • Feed field learnings into Quvia's OR and engineering roadmaps.
  • Support initial configuration, pilots, evaluation, and steady-state operation.
  • Serve as senior technical owner of Grid's optimization layer while translating mission constraints into solvable problems and model capabilities into actionable guidance for program leads.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • U.S. Citizenship - Non-negotiable for this customer engagement.
  • 8+ years of professional experience developing and deploying optimization or operations research systems in production.
  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Operations Research or a closely related quantitative field; Computer Science and Electrical Engineering backgrounds are welcome where the optimization depth is sufficient.
  • Equivalent industry experience will be considered in place of the degree.
  • Deep, applied command of linear and mixed-integer programming, network flow, constraint programming, column generation or other decomposition methods, metaheuristics, and large-scale scheduling.
  • Production-quality code in a compiled or high-performance language (Java, C++, or similar) alongside Python for modeling and analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with commercial and open-source solvers such as Gurobi, CPLEX, OR-Tools, or HiGHS, including modeling APIs, parameter tuning, and callbacks.
  • Track record of working directly with external customers or stakeholders on complex technical engagements.
  • U.S.-based availability with regular travel to and on-site work at customer locations.
  • Some coordination with UK-based colleagues and stakeholders, including occasional early or late calls to cover the time difference.
