About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Edit daily news copy, features, long-form stories, social media copy, and text for video and graphics
  • Edit newsletters for the Local Service Expansion bureaus
  • Cover breaking news under urgent deadlines
  • Ensure inclusive language and framing accurately represent British Columbians’ diverse experiences
  • Ensure stories are balanced and conform to CBC’s in-house style and Journalistic Standards and Practices
  • Curate story packaging, including photos, video, graphics, and embeds
  • Ensure the digital news lineup reflects the day’s top stories and priorities through an audience-first lens
  • Discuss story ideas and assignments with writers and producers while incorporating diverse and under-represented perspectives
  • Identify gaps in stories and clearly guide writers on improving storytelling and packaging
  • Edit and deliver news stories from breaking news to long-form features for CBC digital and social platforms
  • Support journalism across British Columbia and Local Service Expansion reporters in parts of western Canada
  • Make independent editorial decisions and adapt to evolving visual storytelling technologies

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • English proficiency in reading, speaking, and writing at a professional level
  • Strong news judgment and critical thinking
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism
  • Proven ability to package online news stories in compelling and innovative ways
  • Ability to manage large volumes of fast-moving information
  • Strong headline-writing skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Flexibility with work hours on weekdays and weekends
  • University degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years’ experience editing at a print or digital publication preferred
  • Use of content management systems is an asset
  • Knowledge of Canadian Press style is an asset
  • Active use of social media platforms and experience creating social content is an asset
  • Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing
  • Successful candidates must complete a mandatory criminal record check; other background checks may apply
