About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Drive editorial assignment of CBC News’s Canadian coverage across visual, audio, text, streaming and social platforms
- Determine stories to cover 24/7 across platforms with the co-executive producer
- Monitor developments across Canada, scan competition, review meeting minutes and create event calendars
- Pivot quickly for breaking and live news while planning future events and specials
- Seek opportunities for live field reporting
- Oversee assignment meetings and the pitch process
- Plan deployment roadmaps, budgets and travel
- Coordinate coverage with CBC News producers, world teams and regional teams
- Manage deployments while prioritizing employee physical and mental well-being
- Advise senior leadership on staffing, interpersonal relationships and shift changes
- Build a culture of collaboration, feedback and support
- Use audience insights and data to expand reach and deepen engagement
- Help teams navigate complex ethical and legal considerations
- Champion inclusive, authentic storytelling and identify missing perspectives
- Develop verification- and data-driven audience strategies
- Translate strategic ideas into concrete actions
Requirements
What you’ll need- Minimum of seven years of leadership experience in a fast-paced news environment, particularly involving breaking news, national coverage and overseeing large teams through change
- Experience in risk assessment and management is an asset
- Experience in change management
- Exceptional critical thinking and news judgment
- Deep knowledge of legal and ethical issues in journalism
- Ability to translate audience insights and data into effective content decisions and programming results
- Ability to solve technical, resource and operational issues and make decisions under tight deadlines
- Ability to manage multiple short- and long-term tasks and projects
- Comfort navigating rapid change and troubleshooting complex situations under pressure
- Deep understanding of domestic politics, events, geography and history, with strong cultural awareness and sensitivity
- Stellar communication and collaboration skills
- University degree or equivalent professional experience
- Flexibility to work varying hours and overtime, including early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays
- English professional proficiency in reading, speaking and writing
- Successful candidates must complete a mandatory criminal record check and may undergo other background checks
- Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing
