About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide authoritative actuarial advice and technical support to prudential supervisors, management and other areas of the Reserve Bank
  • Assess insurers’ ongoing solvency compliance and financial position
  • Identify and monitor emerging stress and risk
  • Support insurer crisis management
  • Contribute to industry-wide stress testing and thematic reviews
  • Act as a reviewing actuary on licensing, transfers and other supervisory matters
  • Identify and report circumstances indicating distress within a licensed insurer or across the insurance sector
  • Develop risk-based frameworks and processes for oversight of the insurance sector
  • Contribute to solvency-related policy work and wider Financial Stability Group initiatives
  • Engage with licensed insurers, appointed actuaries, industry bodies and domestic and international regulatory agencies
  • Advocate internally and externally for the insurance regime
  • Develop and mentor junior colleagues and share actuarial knowledge across the organisation

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Strong academic or professional qualifications in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics or financial theory
  • Membership of a professional actuarial organisation
  • Post-qualification experience in actuarial work
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills
  • Creative thinking and sound judgement
  • Ability to consider issues holistically
  • Ability to design and implement strategies that achieve required decisions and actions
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and a strong track record of building and maintaining effective professional relationships
  • Experience working as a senior team member and providing guidance and mentoring to junior colleagues
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders
  • Collaborative, positive and enthusiastic approach
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of NZ National Security Clearance
  • Cover letter required
