About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide overall medical direction and consultation for hospice services and programs
  • Supervise hospice physician employees and contract hospice physicians
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, Medicare Conditions of Participation, CHAP, and federal and state statutes
  • Establish and review policies and procedures for patient care, medical education, and emergency procedures
  • Develop and evaluate physician, personnel, and volunteer education programs
  • Evaluate quality assurance and performance improvement plans and identify medical education needs
  • Propose and assess programs addressing identified education needs
  • Liaise with community physicians and provide consultation and education on hospice and palliative-care admission criteria
  • Provide training on caring for terminally ill patients
  • Review patients' hospice eligibility and establish plans of care with attending physicians and the interdisciplinary group
  • Certify terminal illness and provide clinical narratives for subsequent benefit periods
  • Consult with attending physicians on pain and symptom management
  • Manage patient medications and treatments, including prescribing, changing, and discontinuing medications
  • Serve as a medical resource to the interdisciplinary group and attend interdisciplinary group meetings
  • Review and update plans of care every 15 days or as needed
  • Document care and evidence of end-stage disease progression in clinical records
  • Serve as primary physician when referring or attending physicians relinquish care or are unavailable
  • Maintain current knowledge of hospice research, trends, and pain/symptom management
  • Review and develop treatment protocols and propose current intervention options
  • Counsel patients and families regarding end-of-life issues
  • Participate in resolving interpersonal conflicts and clinical or ethical concerns
  • Ensure competent physician services are available 24 hours a day as needed
  • Assist with evaluating protocols and procedures for quality and cost outcomes
  • Travel by automobile to patient locations and work in an office setting

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Completion of medical education and relevant residency training required
  • Fellowship in Palliative Medicine preferred
  • Work experience in internal medicine, geriatrics, palliative medicine, or another relevant field of medicine required
  • Work experience in a certified hospice program and administrative experience preferred
  • Physician licensure by the state in which you work as a doctor of medicine or osteopathy required
  • Must hold, in good standing, a physician license issued by the state in which you work
  • Board certification in hospice and palliative medicine preferred
  • Knowledge and well-developed skills in hospice philosophy, hospice care, recent research, hospice-care trends, and pain and symptom management
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to direct and supervise staff
  • Ability to use various computer software applications
  • CPR certified
  • Valid driver's license and ability to spend approximately 20% of the workday driving to and from patient locations
  • Must maintain any applicable professional license, certificate, or registration in good standing
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
