About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Independently lead retro-commissioning (RCx) and building or system optimization projects for commercial and industrial customers from initial engagement through implementation support, verification, and final reporting
  • Conduct detailed site investigations and facility walkthroughs to evaluate building systems, equipment condition, operating practices, control strategies, and energy efficiency opportunities
  • Analyze HVAC systems, building automation systems, control sequences, schedules, setpoints, reset strategies, equipment sequencing, economizer operation, and other operating conditions
  • Review BAS trend data, interval meter data, utility consumption, equipment operating data, drawings, sequences of operation, and other information
  • Develop RCx measures, engineering analyses, energy and demand savings calculations, implementation cost estimates, payback, and cost-effectiveness analyses
  • Prepare RCx studies and technical reports documenting facility conditions, methodologies, savings calculations, recommendations, implementation requirements, and expected benefits
  • Work with facility managers, operators, maintenance personnel, contractors, customers, and other representatives to validate findings and support implementation
  • Help customers and contractors interpret recommendations, troubleshoot technical issues, refine control strategies, and confirm implementation
  • Perform or support measurement and verification activities using pre- and post-implementation data
  • Manage projects through scheduling, data collection, open-item tracking, documentation, milestones, and deliverables
  • Support customer outreach and project development activities and help identify suitable facilities
  • Coordinate with outreach staff and program team members to transition prospective customers into active projects
  • Manage a portfolio of potentially up to approximately 20 concurrent RCx projects
  • Exercise independent engineering judgment and participate in peer reviews
  • Communicate technical findings, project status, barriers, and next steps to customers, utility representatives, internal teams, and stakeholders
  • Identify implementation barriers and develop practical solutions
  • Support continuous improvement of RCx methodologies, calculation tools, report templates, technical resources, and program processes
  • Conduct regular field work in the Evansville, Indiana area with approximately 25–50% travel
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related engineering or technical field
  • 7+ years of relevant professional experience in energy efficiency, retro-commissioning (RCx), commissioning, building controls, energy engineering, or building systems optimization
  • Strong technical knowledge of commercial and industrial HVAC systems and associated controls
  • Demonstrated experience independently conducting retro-commissioning, commissioning, energy studies, or similar building optimization projects
  • Strong working knowledge of building automation systems (BAS), control sequences, and building operating strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, develop, and evaluate energy conservation measures (ECMs)
  • Experience analyzing BAS trend data, interval meter data, utility data, and equipment operating data
  • Ability to conduct detailed facility walkthroughs and field investigations
  • Experience preparing complete, high-quality technical studies and engineering reports
  • Ability to work directly with facility staff, customers, contractors, and other stakeholders
  • Comfortable supporting customer outreach and project development activities
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and independently drive projects from initiation through completion
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, technical writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Willingness and ability to regularly conduct field work in the Evansville, Indiana area and travel approximately 25–50% of the time
  • Interest in sustainability and passionate about making a meaningful impact on the environment
  • Employment contingent upon successful completion of a comprehensive background check and reference check
  • A pre-employment drug screen may be required if applicable
  • Preferred: Professional Engineer (P.E.) license, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP), Building Commissioning Professional Certification (BCxP), or similar credential
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in a related technical field
  • Preferred: Experience with M&V methodologies, utility-sponsored energy efficiency programs, HVAC/BAS control strategies, control sequences, additional industrial systems, customer outreach, professional engineering studies, ASHRAE standards, IECC, and industry best practices
