About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Build Rillet’s legal function from the ground up
- Determine overall legal strategy, priorities, and operating model as the company scales domestically and internationally
- Advise the executive team and Board on strategic, legal, and risk considerations
- Assess risks and articulate trade-offs for fast, informed decisions
- Build scalable legal frameworks, workflows, and playbooks
- Adopt AI tooling to automate contract review, research, and related legal work
- Review and negotiate MSAs, order forms, DPAs, SOWs, partner contracts, and other commercial deals
- Partner with the revenue team to structure and close deals efficiently
- Advise Engineering, Product, and Design throughout the product development lifecycle
- Guide privacy, data protection, and AI regulatory compliance
- Monitor changing legal, regulatory, and compliance guidance and flag risks and opportunities
- Own corporate governance, equity administration, financing rounds, and Board matters
- Partner with the People team on hiring, policies, employment matters, and workplace issues
Requirements
What you’ll need- 10+ years of experience operating as in-house counsel and within top-tier law firms
- Experience in high-growth environments and scaling businesses through the 150–500 employee range
- Generalist legal background
- Experience with corporate governance, equity, and employment matters
- Experience negotiating commercial contracts
- Operating knowledge of privacy, data protection, AI, and IP transactions
- Systems-oriented approach using AI and automation
- Active member of a U.S. state bar
- Licensed to practice law in California or New York
- Commutable distance from the NYC or San Francisco offices, or willingness to relocate
- Legally authorized to work in the USA
- Must be open to commuting to or relocating to the NYC or San Francisco office
