About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Prepare SR&ED tax incentive claims and assist with claim reviews
- Work with RSM colleagues to gather information for project costing and tax return input
- Identify and quantify eligible SR&ED expenditures, including salaries and wages, subcontractor costs, materials, capital, overhead, and other qualifying costs
- Partner with technical practitioners, finance teams, and client stakeholders to connect project facts, cost support, tax legislation, and client-ready deliverables
- Support CRA and provincial reviews or audits by preparing documentation, responses, claim defense materials, and addressing review questions
- Advise on SR&ED tax credits and deductions in alignment with clients’ fiscal goals and tax reporting requirements
- Research the Income Tax Act, CRA policies, relevant case law, SR&ED programs, and related tax incentives
- Manage multiple SR&ED engagements, including work planning, data gathering, analysis, resource coordination, and timely delivery
- Develop an understanding of clients’ businesses and operational landscapes
- Maintain professional development and pursue ongoing education opportunities
Requirements
What you’ll need- 4+ years of experience in public accounting, taxation, SR&ED consulting, tax incentives, or a related professional services environment
- Finance/tax-focused experience including costing, eligible expenditure analysis, documentation support, and tax return input
- Undergraduate university degree in business, accounting, tax, corporate finance, commerce, business administration, or equivalent
- Experience preparing SR&ED claims, project costing analyses, supporting schedules, and related tax return inputs
- Strong understanding of Canadian corporate taxation and the SR&ED program
- Ability to understand business and financial aspects of client projects, interpret tax legislation and administrative guidance, analyze cost data, and communicate conclusions to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Proficient in TaxPrep/iFirm and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Strong Excel skills for costing, allocation, and support schedules
- Outstanding client service abilities and superior verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work autonomously and in team-based environments
- Ability to collaborate across SR&ED finance, technical, tax, and industry teams
- Detail-oriented, self-starting, and committed to quality
- Ability to adapt within a dynamic, fast-paced workplace and manage complex tasks
- Ability to manage multiple client assignments, prioritize tasks, work autonomously, and meet deadlines
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Professional accounting designation (Chartered Accountant) completed or in progress preferred but not required
- In-depth Tax course completion considered an asset
- Experience claiming Alberta Innovation Employment Grant (IEG) and/or Quebec R&D credit preferred
